FAQ
Build a Sentence questions, answered
Build a Sentence is the first task in the 2026 TOEFL Writing section. You receive 6 to 12 words and must arrange all of them into one grammatically correct sentence. The whole task takes about 6 minutes and each item is scored correct or incorrect.
Unlike the other two writing tasks, Build a Sentence has no 0-5 rubric. Each sentence is simply correct or incorrect, which is why word order, verb forms, and article placement matter so much.
Word order, subject-verb agreement, articles, and linking words come up constantly. Practicing full question sets is the fastest way to find which of these patterns you miss under time pressure.
Sample answers, practice topics, and all blog guides are free to browse. AI-scored practice requires a subscription: $11.89 every 2 weeks or $29.89 per year. Pricing is shown on this page, and there is no signup wall to see it.
Yes. The TOEFL Writing section changed on January 21, 2026 to three task types: Build a Sentence, Write an Email, and Academic Discussion. Writing30 practice follows the official ETS task descriptions and scoring rubrics for that format.
