TOEFL Listening test day preparation guide

Before the Listening Section Starts

The Listening section comes after Reading in the TOEFL 2026 test. Here is what happens in the transition:

Pre-Listening Sequence

  1. Reading section ends - Your Reading answers are automatically saved
  2. Section directions appear - Brief instructions about the Listening format appear on screen
  3. Headphone volume check - You adjust your headphone volume to a comfortable level
  4. Scratch paper - You should have scratch paper ready (provided at check-in). If you need more, raise your hand quietly
  5. Section begins - The first audio clip starts automatically after you click "Continue"

Important: Take a deep breath during the transition. Use the direction screen to prepare mentally. You have already been focused for the Reading section, so take 10 seconds to reset before diving into Listening.

The Headphone Check

Before the Listening section begins, you will hear a sample audio clip and be asked to adjust your volume. This is your only chance to set the volume.

Volume Setting Tips

  • Set volume slightly louder than comfortable - Background noise from other test-takers can increase during the test
  • Check both ears - Make sure audio is balanced and both earpieces work
  • Don't set it too high - Distortion at high volume makes comprehension harder
  • Report issues immediately - If something is wrong with the headphones, alert the proctor before the section starts

Warning: Once the Listening section starts, you typically cannot change the volume. Some test centers may allow minor adjustments, but do not count on it. Get the volume right during the check.

Section Flow & Timing

The Listening section follows a fixed order. Understanding this flow helps you pace your mental energy.

Typical Section Order

~5 min

Choose a Response (5-7 items)

Short conversational exchanges. Quick and straightforward. Warm up your listening here.

~10 min

Campus Conversations (2-3 conversations)

Extended dialogues with 4-5 questions each. Medium difficulty. Take notes on the problem and resolution.

~8 min

Announcements (2-3 clips)

Campus notices and announcements. Focus on who, what, when, and where.

~15 min

Academic Talks (2-3 lectures)

Full academic lectures. The most challenging section. Save energy for this.

Total Time: Approximately 35-40 minutes. There is no break between task types within the Listening section. The timer counts down for the entire section, not per question.

What You See on Screen

The screen layout changes depending on whether audio is playing or you are answering questions.

During Audio Playback

  • • A photograph of the speaker(s) or setting
  • • A progress bar showing how much audio remains
  • • The section timer in the corner
  • • No questions visible yet (for conversations and lectures)

During Questions

  • • The question text at the top
  • • Answer choices (A, B, C, D) below
  • • "Next" button to proceed
  • • Some questions replay a short audio clip
  • • Multi-select questions indicate "Choose 2 answers"

Key Detail: For Choose a Response questions, you hear the audio and see the answer options simultaneously. For longer passages (conversations, lectures), you hear the full audio first, then see questions one at a time. You cannot go back to previous questions.

Between Audio Clips

The brief moments between audio passages are valuable. Use them strategically:

What to Do in Transition Moments

  1. Review your notes briefly - Glance at what you wrote for the passage you just heard. Add any quick details you remember but did not write down.
  2. Clear your mind - Take one deep breath. Do not carry stress from the previous passage into the next one.
  3. Prepare fresh paper space - Move to a clean area of your scratch paper so notes for the next passage are separate.
  4. Read the introduction - The screen will briefly introduce the next passage ("Listen to a conversation between a student and a librarian"). This tells you the context.

Mental Energy Management: The Listening section demands sustained concentration. If you feel your focus slipping during later passages, wiggle your toes, sit up straighter, or take a quick deep breath. Physical micro-adjustments help reset mental focus.
